Looking Ahead To A Year Of Promise
Thoughts On What The Year Holds For Our Industry And Our Company
By Marty Brodnax, President
It’s always hard to make sweeping predictions for the year to come. However, we firmly believe 2022 will be a good year for our industry and for Baker Gulf Coast Industrial (BGCI).
In terms of our industry, we are seeing more projects get the green light after being put on hold last year. Naturally, this is welcome news for contractors. But more importantly, it’s an indicator that our region and our industry are starting to find solid ground after nearly two years of uncertainty.
On a matter closer to home, we will celebrate BGCI’s three-year anniversary this summer. We’re still a young company by many standards, but we are backed by the extensive network and resources of our parent company, Baker Construction Enterprises. We have already brought home awards for two of our projects. And we are working for some of our region’s biggest names, including:
Valero – We constructed a four-drum, 55,000-barrel-per-day coker sulfur recovery unit from the ground up, safely, on time, and on budget for Valero’s Port Arthur facility in Texas.
Project Olive – Our Deep Foundations team completed the Project Olive piling package at IMTT in St. Rose, Louisiana. This was a unique piling project, with multiple pile locations, steel pipes that varied in thickness and length, and extreme site constraints.
Renewable Energy Group (REG) – We have won site development, civil, and piling package work for REG’s renewable diesel expansion and improvement project in Geismar, Louisiana.
Formosa – Our co-workers are on site at the Formosa Plastics HAPF expansion in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, performing civil site prep, underground utilities, and concrete foundations.
Shintech – Last month we started civil work on Shintech’s plant expansion project in Plaquemine, Louisiana.
More To Come In 2022
In terms of industry developments and upcoming projects, here’s what we see for 2022:
Increased demand for lifecycle solutions. Last March, we launched Concrete Solutions to support the full lifecycle of our clients’ facilities. In August, we expanded our Concrete Solutions offering with a new office in Mobile, Alabama. The demand for concrete renovation, restoration, and protection is only going to grow as owners seek to extend the life of their concrete structures.
A rise in renewables. Interest in renewable energy is on the rise. At BGCI, we have the knowledge and resources to tackle any type of industrial project, be it renewable, carbon-based, or chemical. Our values and service-first approach apply universally across the landscape. From new construction to concrete renovation, we have the demonstrated expertise, capabilities, safety record, and financial muscle to efficiently tackle the most challenging projects on land, over water, or with limited access.
Confirmation of our safety practices. We officially have three years of safety data, which anyone in this industry will recognize as an important milestone. Our safety rate reflects that our focus on safety is working. Read more about the steps we’re taking to prevent injuries and incidents on all of our jobsites.
Trust in our solutions. We measure success not just by completing a project according to the scope, but by doing it in a way that earns the trust of our clients. I’m proud to say that we are delivering on this front. We won follow-up packages for numerous projects in 2021, and we have set our sights on earning more this year.
